MIDI Week Singles: "Prisoner of the Badlands" - Jamestown (PC)

"Prisoner of the Badlands" from Jamestown on Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch (2011)
Composer: Francisco Cerda
Label: Humble Bundle, Bandcamp
Publisher: Final Form Games
Developer: Final Form Games

Jamestown has so much good music in it that it was really hard to land on a single song, which is why we started the whole Game Scores series.  I was tempted to use music from late in the game, but I decided upon "Prisoner of the Badlands" for a couple of reasons, besides the obvious: "It's a really cool song."  This song happens in the third stage, "Badlands," where you attempt a rescue mission to break out the fictionalized Joachim Gans from the Conquistador's prison ship.  This is also the last level that the game allows you to play on Normal difficulty before things really ratchet up and the game becomes a lot harder, so I've always interpreted this song as a song of nostalgia, reminding the player about the good times, the eaiser times.

Except the music in each stage is the same regardless of the difficulty level.  So when you play "Badlands" on Legendary, which the game requires you to do before you can play the final level, you're going to have to hear this song multiple times through agrivating upon agrivating level.

But like Bit.Trip Runner and Super Meat Boy, having wonderful beautifully composed and orchestrated music that is as enjoyable to listen to outside of the game as it is within the game, can 100% make a difference in enjoying a game that's constantly kicking your ass.
